Swanton Novers National Nature Reserve

The moment you step onto Swanton Novers, you understand why Norfolk birders get obsessive about this place. It's a working nature reserve - part grassland, part woodland, part wetland - which means it feels genuinely wild rather than manicured. The trails are straightforward enough, though you'll want proper footwear if it's been wet; the ground squelches in places.

This is absolutely the spot for serious birdwatchers and anyone who actually enjoys identifying things rather than just pointing at birds from a distance. In winter, you might spot rough-legged buzzards. Spring brings nightingales. The reserve manager knows what they're doing, and the walking routes are genuinely helpful rather than just a map you squint at for ten minutes. Families with patient kids will get something from it; those expecting "attractions" will be disappointed within an hour.

You can spend two hours here or half a day depending on your pace and how many birds you want to photograph. It's free, which is proper generous given the upkeep required. The nearest base is Fakenham, but honestly Ashcroft Glamping (just over 2 miles away) is the far better option - you'll wake up surrounded by countryside and can head straight out. Norfolk Coast Caravans and Camping works too if you want something larger, though it's nearly 6 miles further on.

Go early morning in spring for the best birdsong. Midday visits in July feel a bit lifeless.
