Swanley Park

A proper slice of southeast London woodland that doesn't require a trek into Surrey. Swanley Park is the sort of place you find by accident - a 105-acre nature reserve tucked between the M25 and suburban housing that somehow feels miles away from either.

The park centres around a lake, which is the main draw. You get pleasant walking trails looping around it, patches of woodland thick enough to feel like you're in the countryside despite the distant rumble of motorway traffic. The wetland areas are good for spotting birds - nothing exotic, mind you, but it's the sort of place where you might see herons, tufted ducks, and the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky and patient.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's flat, easy terrain, maybe 90 minutes to do the whole circuit without rushing. Families with young kids will manage fine too - there's enough open space and water to keep them entertained for a couple of hours, though don't expect a playground or facilities beyond basic bins and benches.

Free to visit and no entrance gate that I could see. Spring and early autumn are best - the lake's more active then, and the woods feel fresher. It works perfectly as a half-day stop if you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby like Abbey Wood. It's not spectacular, and you won't go home thinking it was the highlight of your trip, but it's honest green space that actually delivers a bit of peace. The kind of place locals use regularly and visitors overlook.
