Swanage Methodist Church

The Methodist Church sits on the high street in Swanage, a solid Victorian building that's easy to walk past if you're not looking for it. Inside, it's surprisingly light and airy - proper Victorian craftsmanship with decent stained glass and a real sense of community spirit. The organ's worth a listen if you time it right for a service.

This isn't a major tourist draw, which is precisely why it works. You'll get maybe twenty minutes out of it, longer if you're genuinely interested in Methodist heritage or Victorian church architecture. The staff are friendly and usually happy to chat about the building's history. It's the sort of place that appeals to history enthusiasts and architecture buffs rather than families after a day out - kids will get restless quickly.

Free entry, as far as I could tell, though a donation box sits by the door. Opening times vary depending on services, so ring ahead or check during Sunday worship if you're planning a visit. It sits within easy walking distance of Swanage Bay View Holiday Park, which is right on the coast, so you could couple a look round the church with the beach in an afternoon. The town itself has enough independent shops and decent fish and chips to make it worthwhile. If you're staying longer, Ulwell Holiday Park and Woodyhyde Campsite are both close enough for a day trip into town. Worth fifteen minutes of your time if you're already in Swanage, but don't go out of your way.
