Swanage Coast Path

The cliff walk from Swanage south towards Durlston Head is one of those coastal paths that sneaks up on you. You start at the seafront near the town pier, and within twenty minutes you're properly away from the crowds, perched above water that's genuinely blue on a decent day.

The path itself hugs the Jurassic Coast - Swanage's big draw is the geology, and you'll see it immediately in the rust-coloured and grey rock faces dropping to your right. The walking is moderate rather than punishing; some steep sections but nothing that'll have you gasping for breath. Most people do it as a there-and-back from town, which takes a solid three hours if you're not stopping to examine fossils or take photos every ten minutes.

Families with primary-aged kids find this brilliant. The path is well-maintained, there are benches at sensible intervals, and the views keep even restless children entertained. Walkers and geology enthusiasts will spend longer, scrutinising the cliff face and poking about the beach if the tide allows.

It's free, obviously - you just walk out your door. Summer weekends get rammed with day-trippers, so go on a weekday morning if you can. The weather on the south coast can turn quickly, so check the forecast.
