Swanage Beach

The beach at Swanage curves in a proper crescent, backed by Victorian architecture and a working pier that's been there since the 1860s. Golden sand stretches for a decent stretch, and the water's clear enough that you can actually see what you're swimming into - which is more than you get at a lot of English seaside spots. Low cliffs hem it in nicely, stopping it feeling exposed, and there's actual character here rather than just sand and resignation.

It's a family beach through and through. Lifeguards patrol in summer, there are the standard arcades and chip shops, and shallow water near the shore means small kids can paddle without you having a cardiac episode. Older children will get more from it than you might expect - the pier still has decent amusement machines, and the rocky pools at either end keep explorers busy for hours. The seafront promenade is flat and easy to walk along, which matters when you're managing multiple kids and a pushchair.

Walkers will want to head to the eastern end where the sand gives way to shale and the start of some proper coastal paths. The cliffs here aren't dramatic, but they're pleasant enough, and the walk towards Durlston Country Park takes you through something more interesting than seaside gardens.

Stay at Ulwell Holiday Park or Swanage Bay View if you're basing yourself nearby - both are within shouting distance - and you've got immediate access without fighting for car park space in peak season. Summer weekends get rammed, so an early morning swim before the crowds arrive is absolutely worth the alarm call.
