Suidhe Ghuirmain

The walk up Suidhe Ghuirmain from Beauly is a proper hill rather than a casual stroll, but it's the kind of ascent that rewards you immediately. Once you reach the summit - it's not exactly Alpine, but it feels like proper mountain country up here - the view across the Strathglass valley opens out properly. On a clear day you can see right across to the bigger peaks beyond, which makes the initial slog feel justified.

This is absolutely walker territory. The path isn't signed with any tourist fanfare, which you'll either love or find frustrating depending on your mood. Families will find it doable if your kids are happy on a moderately steep hillside for an hour or so, though younger legs might struggle. History buffs won't find much here beyond the landscape itself, but that's rather the point - it's about the Highland terrain and the views, not attractions at the summit.

Give yourself two hours minimum, though you could stretch it to three if you're not racing. There's no admission charge; you just turn up and walk. Weekday mornings are quieter, which is worth knowing if you prefer solitude.

If you're camping at Cannich Woodland just down the road, Suidhe Ghuirmain makes a solid morning objective before heading elsewhere. It's close enough not to eat half your day, but substantial enough to feel like actual exercise. Loch Ness Glamping is a bit further out, but still within reasonable striking distance if you want a hill walk as part of a wider Highlands stay.
