Sugar's Holt

Ancient woodland near Market Rasen that feels proper removed from the world, despite being minutes from the town. Sugar's Holt is the sort of place you stumble into rather than plan a day around - dense trees, quiet paths, the occasional glimpse of light breaking through the canopy. It's woodland walking territory, nothing flashy, and that's the whole appeal.

You're looking at an hour or two here depending on how far you fancy wandering and whether you want to actually sit still for a bit. The paths wind through genuine old-growth forest - the kind of place that makes you remember why people used to find these places spooky. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretation boards telling you what tree is what. You either like that or you don't.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes of trees looking like other trees, but older children and proper walkers will get something out of it. It's the sort of walk that works best when you're not in a rush - no destination, just moving through the wood with decent shoes and maybe a map.

If you're camping at Into the Wild Glamping or Lindsey Trail just down the road, Sugar's Holt slots in nicely as a morning walk before you head elsewhere. The Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape surrounds the area, so you could chain a few days together exploring the wider landscape. Go when it's not raining, because wet woodland trails turn into something far less appealing.
