Suffolk Wildlife Trust - Groton Woods

The woods near Groton aren't what you'd call dramatic, but they grow on you. Ancient woodland managed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust, packed with sessile oaks and sweet chestnuts that have probably stood since before anyone thought to fence them in. You're looking at proper footpaths threading through, streams cutting through the floor, and in spring the whole place gets carpeted in bluebells - genuinely striking if you time it right.

It's the sort of place where you actually spot things. Nuthatches, great woodpeckers, fallow deer hanging back in the clearings. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; leave them at home if you just want a straightforward walk. Families with younger kids might find it a touch quiet and samey after forty minutes or so, but older children and actual nature types will spend hours here.

The walk is gentle, no significant climbs, and you can route it however you fancy - anything from a quick thirty-minute loop to a proper couple of hours if you're dawdling and stopping regularly. Free to access. Combine it with Polstead Country Park just down the road for a fuller day out, or stay closer to Colchester if you've got other plans.

Go early if you can. Mid-morning onwards brings dog walkers, and the magic does get a bit diluted by half eleven. Summer's fine but autumn is when this place really pays dividends - the light shifts through the trees in that particular way that makes photographers lose their minds.
