Sturminster Newton Mill

The old mill sits right on the Stour, its brick facade reflected in the water when you approach from the bridge. Sturminster Newton Mill has been grinding corn since the 12th century, though the current structure dates to the 1750s - you can still see the waterwheel turning when conditions allow. It's genuinely working machinery, not a museum piece gathering dust.

Inside, the machinery tells the story of how this place kept the town fed for centuries. You'll see the millstones, the gears, the whole operation - it makes you realize how much skill went into milling before electricity did the job for us. The space is tight and atmospheric, all creaking wood and flour dust, which kids find either brilliant or mildly claustrophobic depending on their age.

Allow a solid hour if you're going to understand how it actually works. The staff are usually good at explaining things, though opening hours can be a bit variable - worth ringing ahead. Admission is reasonable, nowhere near museum-standard prices.

It works perfectly as a half-day stop while exploring Sturminster Newton itself, or as a break if you're based at Starlight Glamping down the road. The riverside setting is lovely for a stroll afterwards, and there's decent parking. Not the sort of place that'll occupy you for a whole day, but it's the genuine article - no frills, no gift shop theatre, just a functioning mill doing what mills do. Worth seeing if you're in the area.
