Sturminster Castle

The ruins of Sturminster Castle sit on a ridge just outside Sturminster Newton, and they're honestly a bit of a letdown if you're expecting something dramatic. What you get is earthworks, mainly - the remains of a motte and bailey from the 12th century. There's not much standing stonework to speak of, which means a lot depends on your imagination and whether you fancy a short walk across fields to reach it.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to serious castle enthusiasts and local history buffs rather than casual tourists. Kids might get bored after ten minutes unless they're into scrambling about on grassy slopes. The site itself is free to access and takes maybe 20-30 minutes to properly explore, though you'll need to find where to park and navigate to it on foot.

What makes it worth the trip is the context. Sturminster Newton is a proper market town with actual character, and the castle fits into a broader afternoon of pottering around the medieval streets and riverside walks. If you're based at Starlight Glamping or Gold Hill Glamping - both cracking spots with excellent reviews - it's close enough for a morning outing alongside other Dorset attractions. The setting is pleasant rather than spectacular, and the views across the Dorset countryside are decent enough to justify the walk. Just don't expect Instagram moments or grand ruins. Bring a route map or use your phone GPS to find the earthworks themselves, as signage is minimal.
