Stratton Bates Recreation Ground

The woodland paths at Stratton Bates feel properly remote, even though you're just outside Alresford. This is a nature reserve that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. Oak and beech dominate the canopy, and if you time it right - early morning, especially - you'll spot deer moving through the clearings. The ground is soft underfoot, boggy in places after rain, so decent boots matter.

It's the kind of spot walkers genuinely enjoy. The paths meander without much fanfare or signage, which means you need to pay attention, but that's part of the appeal. Birdwatchers know it well - great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, and various warblers depending on season. Kids under ten might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're into spotting wildlife; teenagers who like a proper woodland ramble will get more from it.

Alresford itself is only a mile or so away, so you can combine this with a visit to the town's centre if you want lunch. It's genuinely convenient for anyone staying at The Spinney Caravan Park, which sits just down the road - you could be here within five minutes. Even from Hampshire Hills or Woodlands Camping, it's a short drive and worth the effort on a decent day.

Free to access, no facilities on-site that I could find, so bring water. An hour's walk is realistic; longer if you actually stop and listen.
