Stotfold Mill Meadows

The River Ivel winds through Stotfold Mill Meadows like it's got nowhere to be - which is rather the point. This stretch of grassland and water meadow east of Baldock is one of those places that rewards a slow walk more than a rushed visit. The meadows themselves are what draw you in: open, green, and properly restful after too much time on the A1(M).

The old mill gives the place its character, though it's the riverside walk that most people come for. You'll spot waterfowl if you're quiet about it, and the water moves slowly enough that you can actually think here. It's the sort of spot where families with younger children won't struggle - the paths are manageable and there's room to run about without much danger. Walkers get genuine value from the route, though it's not challenging terrain. History types might find the industrial heritage angle interesting, but don't expect interpretation boards or much in the way of explanation.

If you're based at Ashridge Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this is an easy morning outing. The whole thing takes ninety minutes at a proper pace, including a sit-down break. Bring binoculars if you're into bird-watching - the light is best from mid-morning onwards. Free to access, no faffing about with gates or payment booths. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's genuinely pleasant and beats another lap of the holiday park.
