Storefield Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination you'd necessarily plan a day around, Storefield Wood sits just outside Kettering and offers a decent stretch of legs if you're camping at one of the nearby parks. The trees are mature - oak and beech mostly - with a network of paths that wind through without being so confusing you'll actually get lost. Nothing dramatic happens here. There are no viewpoints, no tea rooms, no Instagram moments. What you get is quiet. The kind of place where you notice things - bird calls, the smell of damp earth, how the light filters through in layers.

Walkers will appreciate it most, particularly those after a two to three hour outing without the scramble of something like Rockingham Forest further south. Families with young kids might find an hour satisfying, though it's not equipped for prams and the paths can be muddy even after dry spells. It's free to access, which is the way it should be.

If you're staying at Northfield Farm or Get Lost In Nature - both excellent parks, the latter especially - you could work this in as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Pair it with one of the larger country estates in the area for a fuller day. Go early if you want solitude. Late afternoon crowds it with other locals, which rather defeats the purpose of coming to a wood.
