Stony Ditch

Water sits perfectly still here most days, and that's rather the point of Stony Ditch. This modest lake near Leiston in Suffolk won't win any dramatic-scenery competitions, but it's the kind of place where you actually notice things - dragonflies, the specific way light hits the water at different times of day, bird movements through the reeds.

It's a working fishing lake, so you'll see anglers scattered along the banks, and that tells you something about the water quality. Walkers pass through regularly; the path around it is flat and manageable, taking roughly forty minutes if you don't stop. Most people do stop though. There's something about water that demands it.

This is proper territory for birdwatchers and anyone who wants a quiet walk without the crowds you'd find at honeypot spots. Families with young children can manage it fine - there are decent vantage points from the path - though it's not a major play destination. Photographers might spend an hour here, especially in the golden hour before sunset.

Stony Ditch works brilliantly as a morning walk if you're staying at Wantisden Park or Run Cottage, both rated highly and within easy driving distance. Leiston itself has enough for a lunch stop. The lake isn't a destination in itself, but that's exactly why it's worth visiting. No crowds, no gift shops, no artificial viewing platforms. Just water and the Suffolk flatlands doing what they do best.
