Stonetor Hill Cairn Circle

The walk up to Stonetor Hill rewards you with Bronze Age circles that feel genuinely remote, despite being only a short drive from Exeter. You're looking at a proper cairn circle - the kind of thing that stops you mid-stride because you can suddenly picture people standing exactly where you're standing, three and a half thousand years ago.

It's not dramatic in the way standing stones can be. The rocks are modest, weathered, and scattered across moorland that rolls out in all directions. But that's precisely what makes it work. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no crowds - just archaeology on its own terms. You get here because you want to, not because the National Trust has packaged it up.

History types and serious walkers will find this worthwhile. Kids might manage it if they're the exploring kind, but there's no play area or obvious structure to hook their interest - it's more about the landscape and the story than the physical site itself. The moorland walk is pleasant rather than strenuous, though weather matters. Come when the ground isn't waterlogged.

If you're based at Woodland Springs Touring Park, it's a decent half-day trip that fits naturally into a broader exploration of Dartmoor and the surrounding area. Exeter's close enough if you need town facilities, but Stonetor feels properly separated from all that. Worth the detour if you're into archaeology, less so if you're after instant visual impact.
