Stonepit Field

There's something about the raw, undisturbed feel of Stonepit Field that makes you forget you're barely half an hour from Milton Keynes town centre. This is proper countryside - the kind where you might actually spot something worthwhile rather than just walk in circles admiring the same oak trees.

It's a working nature reserve, so don't expect manicured paths or benches every fifty metres. The site protects a decent stretch of unimproved grassland and woodland, which means the birdlife can actually be decent if you're patient. Dragonflies and butterflies thrive here too, particularly in summer when the wildflowers get going. Bring binoculars; it genuinely rewards that kind of attention.

Walkers get the most from this place. It's not a destination that'll hold a five-year-old's attention for long, but keen naturalists and serious twitchers will find their time well spent. Allow a good hour if you're really looking; you could knock round the perimeter in 30 minutes if you're just after the exercise.

The real win is proximity to Ekeney House Campsite just five miles south - makes for a logical morning or late afternoon wander if you're based there for a few nights. Facilities at the reserve itself are minimal, so come prepared. Free access, as far as these things go, though the exact details are worth confirming before you head out. Go early in the day or late afternoon for the best wildlife activity. Spring and early summer hit the sweet spot.
