Stonemasons

The Stonemasons site near St. Neots is one of those places you'll walk past and nearly miss - easy to do when you're focused on getting into the town itself. It's a historic working area where you can see the actual evidence of the craft that built half of England's medieval churches and grand houses. The stone here tells the story properly, with tool marks still visible on blocks that have sat for centuries.

You're not looking at a grand building or a manicured heritage attraction. This is rougher than that - the real bones of how things got made. History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting, though you need a bit of imagination to picture the workshops and the stonemasons at labour. Families with young children might struggle to occupy them for long; there's not much interactive stuff here, and the appeal is fairly cerebral.

Timing-wise, you won't need more than 45 minutes unless you're really keen on medieval craftsmanship. Free access, which is a bonus. Best visited as part of a broader St. Neots wander rather than as a destination in itself. If you're based at St. Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site - just half a mile away - it's absolutely worth a quick trip on an afternoon before heading to town proper. The other parks nearby, Cambridgeshire Lakes and Grafham Water, are further out but still reasonable for a morning detour if you're park-hopping. Go when the light's decent; the stone details photograph well in late afternoon.
