Stonehouse Viaduct

The railway viaduct that dominates the landscape near Lanark is a proper Victorian engineering feat - a vast stone structure that you can't help but gawp at as you approach it. Built in 1875 to carry trains across the deep valley of the River Clyde, this thing is genuinely impressive: twelve arches spanning 541 feet, all rendered in pale sandstone that catches the light in unexpected ways depending on the time of day.

You can walk underneath it, which is the real draw. The ground-level view is humbling - those arches tower overhead and the proportions are just right in that way Victorian engineers seemed to nail instinctively. Most visitors spend 20 minutes to half an hour down there taking photos and working out how they'd have built the thing without modern equipment. Kids generally find it fascinating because it's properly monumental without requiring any effort to appreciate.

The viaduct isn't fenced off or managed as a formal attraction - you just turn up and have a look. Getting there from Lanark takes 10 minutes or so by car. It's free, obviously. If you're staying at Ecosse Glamping nearby, this is an easy diversion that justifies being outdoors without the full commitment of a proper walk. That said, there's not much else at the site itself - it's the structure you've come for. On balance, worth the detour if you're already in the area exploring South Lanarkshire, but not worth planning your entire trip around.
