Stonebridge Wild River Reserve

The River Avon runs wild here, carving through chalk downland in a way that feels properly untamed for somewhere so close to civilisation. Stonebridge Wild River Reserve sits just outside Pewsey, and it's one of those places where the landscape does most of the talking for you. You're walking through riverside woodland with the water doing its thing below - sometimes rushing, sometimes pooling into clear stretches where you might spot trout. The chalk geology is obvious everywhere, white cliffs rising up where the river's done its work over millennia.

It's excellent for anyone who likes a proper walk without needing to drive hours into the wilderness. Families with older children will get on well here - there's enough of a path to follow and enough interest in the water and wildlife to keep them engaged. History buffs will appreciate what the river itself represents, though don't expect visitor centres or plaques. Bring binoculars if you're into birds and small mammals; the reserve supports kingfishers and water voles if you're patient enough.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, more if you're the lingering type. The walk isn't gruelling but it's not a gentle stroll either - some uneven ground, the odd muddy patch. Free to access, no facilities that I'm aware of, so pack what you need. It combines brilliantly with a stay at Totteridge Farm or Ridgeway Campsite just down the road - proper bases for exploring the Avon Valley properly. Winter's atmospheric here; summer's when the light through the trees is best.
