Stone circle and cairn

You're looking at genuine archaeology - not reconstructed, not tidied up for tourists. The stones themselves tell the story, some upright, others listing like old teeth. The cairn nearby is a burial mound, and standing near it gives you an odd sense of how long humans have marked their dead on high ground.

Walkers get the most from this. It's not a five-minute stop - you're out on open moorland, breathing it in, understanding why someone 4,000 years ago thought this particular spot mattered enough to move rocks here. Families with young kids might find it brief, unless they're already into archaeology or enjoy a proper moorland walk. History enthusiasts will spend time working out the alignments and thinking about ritual.

Access appears unrestricted - it's outdoors and open to the moor. No facilities that we know of, so bring water and decent boots. The nearest town is Exeter, which gives you proper amenities before heading out. Woodland Springs Touring Park sits four miles away if you're basing yourself locally.

Best visited on clear days when you can actually see the landscape the circle commanded. Mist rolls in fast here, and stones lose their punch when visibility drops.
