Stock village sign

The village sign at Stock is one of those things you'd drive past a hundred times without noticing, then suddenly stop to actually look at properly. It's a proper piece of folk art - a painted wooden sign that tells you something about the place in a way those standardised brown tourism board efforts never manage.

Stock itself is a proper Essex village, the sort with a green and a church and the kind of quiet that makes you wonder why you don't visit Essex more often. The sign sits where you'd expect, at the entrance or centre of things, and it's the sort of detail that rewards a five-minute stop. You're not looking at a museum installation here - it's functional village signage that's been done with actual care and character.

Historically minded types will get more from it than most, but anyone passing through on a walk or a drive between Ingatestone and somewhere else might as well have a proper look. It won't take you long. No admission charge, no opening hours to worry about - it's just there.

If you're based at Stuarts Wood Campsite down the road, you could easily work this into a morning potter around the village. It's the kind of thing that stops a countryside amble feeling like you've only seen hedge and field. Barleylands, a bit further out, would make it part of a slightly larger exploration of the area rather than a main event.
