Stoborough Heath National Nature Reserve

Walking across Stoborough Heath feels like stepping into one of those landscapes you only see on nature documentary opening credits. This National Nature Reserve sprawls across heathland just outside Wareham, and it's the real deal for anyone after proper Dorset countryside without the crowds.

The heath itself is what draws you in. Open, windswept, covered in gorse and heather depending on the season, with pockets of pine woodland breaking up the vista. You're looking at Bronze Age burial mounds dotted about, which adds a layer of intrigue if you're into that sort of thing. The walking's straightforward enough - trails loop through without any major elevation gains, making it accessible for families who can handle uneven ground and the occasional boggy patch.

Best visited in late summer when the heather's actually flowering; spring's decent too but you'll share the space with more birdwatchers. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper wander, less if you just want a quick circuit. It's free to access, naturally.
