St.Nicholas, Kilton

The church sits quietly at Kilton, a few miles inland from Holford, and if you're camping nearby at Moorhouse or Haven Doniford Bay, it's absolutely worth a detour on foot or a short drive. St Nicholas is a proper medieval parish church - the sort of place where you can actually feel the centuries pressing down on the stonework.

Inside, there's decent medieval detail: decent brass work and the sort of quiet that only old churches manage. It's not a showstopper like some Somerset churches, but that's rather the point. You won't battle crowds. The building itself tells you more than any guide could about how people actually lived and worshipped here for 800 years.

Historically minded visitors will find it rewarding. Kids might tolerate it for 20 minutes if they're keen on climbing the tower or spotting gargoyles, but it's not interactive. Parents wanting a peaceful 15-minute break during a holiday will find it properly restorative.

Admission appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally when you arrive - village churches sometimes have varying policies. Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through. The churchyard itself is pleasant for a wander, and the countryside around Kilton is the real draw. Pair it with a walk across the Quantocks or use it as a stopping point if you're exploring between your campsite and Holford village proper.
