Steamer Point Nature Reserve

The Avon estuary at Christchurch draws walkers and birdwatchers to Steamer Point Nature Reserve like nothing else in the area. It's a proper working landscape - mudflats, saltmarsh, and shallow water where wading birds hunt at low tide. The light here shifts constantly depending on the water level and time of day, which sounds daft until you're actually standing there with binoculars watching redshanks and curlews probe the mud.

You're looking at a free reserve, though there's limited infrastructure - a car park and a footpath or two. Allow an hour minimum if you're serious about it, longer if you've got a decent camera or field guide. Spring and autumn migrations are when it really sings; winter brings the geese; summer is quieter but fine if you want to avoid crowds. Families with older kids who can hold binoculars will do well here. Toddlers might find it a slog.

Geographically it's ideal if you're based at Hoburne Park or Sandhills - both are under a mile away - making it a top choice for a morning jaunt before heading inland to explore. The New Forest caravan sites a few miles north give you a whole different landscape option. What makes Steamer Point work is the sheer birdlife density for a small patch. It's not dramatic or Instagram-ready, but it's doing what a nature reserve should: letting you actually see wildlife going about its day.
