Stùc a' Chroin

Getting to the summit of Stùc a' Chroin takes the better part of a morning, but the views across Perthshire make every step worth it. This 975-metre peak sits above Lochearnhead and rewards walkers with properly expansive vistas over Loch Earn and the surrounding hills. The ascent is steep in places - no dodging that - but the path is straightforward enough, and you'll find yourself among some of Scotland's most dramatic terrain without the tourist crowds that plague Ben Lomond further south.

History types will appreciate knowing this sits on the edge of classic Highland country, where lowland farming meets proper mountain wilderness. It's a genuine hill walk rather than a stroll, so come prepared with decent boots and water. Most people allow three to four hours return from the lower car park near Lochearnhead. Families with older kids (14 plus, honestly) will manage it fine on a good day. Younger children will struggle with the sustained climb and loose scree near the top. It's free to access, as with most Scottish hills, and there's no designated season - though winter requires serious experience and kit.
