Staverton Recreation Ground

The Staverton Recreation Ground sits on the edge of Daventry and feels like the sort of place locals have known about for years without making a fuss. It's a proper nature reserve - grassland and woodland mixed together - where you can actually spot things if you're paying attention. Woodpeckers, various warblers, and if you're lucky, grass snakes cutting through the undergrowth.

Walkers get the most from it. There are decent paths through the reserve, nothing strenuous, and it's the kind of spot where an hour turns into two because you keep stopping to listen or look at birds. Families with older kids will find it engaging enough, though younger ones might lose interest quickly - there's no playground infrastructure, just the reserve itself.

The ground is free to access, which is brilliant value. Come spring or early summer when the birds are actively breeding and the wildflowers are up - that's when it properly comes alive. Winter's quiet and stripped back, which some people prefer.

It works nicely alongside a park holiday in the area. Whitefeather Campsite is just two miles away and sits on the north side of Daventry, while Holt Farm Campsite and Hill Farm Glamping both sit within striking distance if you're wanting somewhere more rural. You could base yourself at any of these and use Staverton as a morning walk before heading elsewhere - it's intimate enough that you don't need a full day, but rewarding enough to justify the trip if you're into birds or quiet green spaces.
