Staunton Harold Reservoir

The water at Staunton Harold is proper still on a grey morning - like glass reflecting the sky back at itself. It's a reservoir, yes, but don't let that put you off; this isn't some industrial eyesore. The lake sits surrounded by woodland and open banks, and it's one of those places that feels genuinely peaceful rather than forced about it.

You can walk the perimeter, which takes a good couple of hours depending on pace and how many times you stop to watch the water. The southern bank is where most people gravitate - easier access, better sightlines across to the far woods. Wildlife watchers will have a field day here. Birdwatchers especially. I've seen herons working the shallows, and the dragonflies in summer are everywhere.

It's brilliant for families who want a proper walk without drama. Kids can safely explore the banks, chuck stones (the harmless kind), and burn off energy without anyone getting bored. The nearest significant town is Derby, which sits about twenty minutes south, so you're genuinely in countryside here despite being accessible.

If you're staying at Field of Dreams or Broadleaves - both just down the road - this becomes your daily stroll. Neither glamping site is far enough to make it a car journey; you could practically walk to the reservoir. Conkers Camping is slightly further out but still within easy reach.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of. Just turn up, park sensibly, and walk. Go early to avoid crowds, though honestly they're rare here anyway. Winter's actually underrated - fewer insects, clearer sightlines, and you might have it almost to yourself.
