Stargate Ponds and Bewes Hills

The ponds themselves are unremarkable - two shallow pools that wouldn't merit a second glance if they weren't accompanied by that ridiculous name. But Bewes Hills is the real draw here, rising abruptly from the Northumberland landscape with views that stretch for miles on a clear day. The walk up takes twenty minutes or so, nothing strenuous, and rewards you with a proper sense of having climbed something.

It's the kind of spot that works best for walkers and anyone after some uncluttered views without the crowds you'd get at better-known viewpoints. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming - once you've reached the top and taken your photos, there's not much else to occupy them. Teenagers who actually enjoy walking will get more from it.

Derecroft's the nearest town, though it's small enough that you won't find much there beyond basics. Valley View Camping & Glamping sits about six miles away and makes a sensible base if you're planning a few days of walking in the area. The ponds are free to visit, obviously, and there's no set hours - it's one of those accessible-any-time places. Go in late afternoon when the light's better and fewer people are about. Summer works fine, but autumn's probably the sweet spot when the grass is still passable but the air feels sharper.
