Stargate

Stargate is a contemporary art gallery just outside Southampton that punches well above its weight. It's the kind of place that catches you off guard - you're not expecting much from a Hampshire gallery, and then you walk in and find yourself genuinely engaged with what's on the walls.

The space itself is fairly intimate, which works in its favour. Rather than feeling grand or intimidating, it has the atmosphere of somewhere you could actually spend an afternoon without your feet giving out. The programming tends towards emerging artists and experimental work, so you won't see the usual tired retrospectives you get everywhere else. It changes regularly, which means there's a proper reason to return.

It's worth a visit if you're into contemporary art or simply after something a bit different from the standard seaside caravan park routine. Kids might find it a slower afternoon than a theme park, but older teenagers who care about art will get something from it. Families based at nearby Sunnydale Farm or Bell Tent Glamping could easily slot this into a day trip - it's only a short drive from either.

I'd ring ahead to check current exhibitions and opening hours before making the trip, as smaller galleries can be a bit variable. Free admission is likely, though do confirm. Allow an hour minimum, longer if the work really hooks you. It's not a blockbuster outing, but it's the sort of stop that makes a holiday feel slightly more cultured than just sitting in a caravan.
