Stantling Flow

The walk up Stantling Flow rewards you with proper panoramic views across Northumberland's rolling moorland. It's a genuine peak rather than a gentle stroll - the climb demands decent legs and sturdy boots, but once you're up there, the sense of space is extraordinary.

From the summit you're looking out over the Pennine landscape, with Hexham sitting down in the valley below and the broader sweep of the North East falling away. On a clear day it's worth the effort. On a murky one, frankly, you're paying good money in shin effort for very little reward, so check the forecast first.

This works brilliantly if you're based at either Kielder Waterside or Landal Kielder Waterside - both are within an easy drive - because you get proper moorland hiking without the slog of somewhere like the Lake District peaks. The terrain is tougher than a casual walk but less technical than the higher Pennine routes. Reckon on two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness.

It's not a family toddler destination - teenagers and active adults will find it far more satisfying. The isolation is part of the appeal. You won't find crowds or facilities at the top, just wind and space and the kind of views that justify coming to this corner of England. Worth the detour if you're staying in the area and want proper moorland time without the tourist infrastructure.
