Standingstone Farm

It's the sort of place that doesn't shout about itself - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just a weathered chunk of rock that's outlasted empires. The stone itself sits on farmland, which means access depends on the farmer's goodwill, so it's worth checking locally before you trek out from Dunbar.

This appeals mainly to archaeology enthusiasts and Bronze Age obsessives rather than casual day-trippers. If you're into standing stones, Scotland's full of them, but there's something about seeing one in its actual working landscape rather than cordoned off in a heritage park that feels proper. The walk out here takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest car parking, and the views across East Lothian's farmland are decent enough to justify the effort.

It's free, obviously - there's nothing to charge for and nowhere to charge it from. The best time to visit is outside the farming season when access is most straightforward, though you should always ask permission at the farm itself. Worth the detour if you're genuinely interested in Neolithic monuments, but don't expect facilities or interpretation boards.
