Standing Stone

Out on the moorland near Llanymynech, a solitary slab of stone stands exactly as it has for thousands of years. It's the kind of thing you could easily miss if you weren't looking for it - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just rock and grass and the wind coming off the hills.

What you're looking at is genuinely ancient. This standing stone dates back to the Bronze Age, and there's something properly moving about that when you're standing next to it. No one can tell you with certainty what it was for - burial marker, territorial boundary, meeting place - but that mystery is half the appeal. You get the full weight of prehistory in a single, weathered chunk of rock.

It's a straightforward walk to reach it, the kind of thing that works well if you're already out rambling across Mid Wales. Families won't get much from it on its own - five minutes and you're done - but walkers and anyone interested in Bronze Age Britain will find it worth the detour. It photographs well too, especially early morning when the light's low.

Free to visit, obviously. The nearest town is Llanymynech, which gives you context for where this sits in the landscape. If you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Tanat, Foxtail, or Fairhaven are all within five or six miles - it makes a decent morning's outing combined with a proper walk across the moorland. Don't expect facilities or opening hours because there aren't any. Just turn up, take your time with it, and let it work on you.
