Stanborough Reedmarsh

The reed beds at Stanborough stretch out in front of you like something from the Norfolk Broads, except you're barely a mile from Welwyn Garden City. It's a proper surprise - this wetland reserve tucked between suburbia and the A1(M), yet genuinely peaceful once you find your way in.

You're here to watch birds, mostly. The viewing platform gives decent sight lines across the water, and depending on the season you'll clock herons, grebes, and if you're lucky, the occasional harrier cutting across the reeds. It's not a place to rush - bring binoculars and patience. The walk itself is gentle, nothing more than twenty minutes to the viewpoint and back, making it manageable for families with younger kids, though toddlers might lose interest fairly quickly unless they're obsessed with ducks.

The reserve is free to access, which helps when you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks. Cherry Green Trees is less than three miles away, or Commons Wood if you want the campsite feel - both work well as a home base for exploring the valley. Spring and autumn are prime for birdwatchers, but honestly, even on a grey February afternoon when you're stuck indoors at the caravan, a quick hour here clears the head.

It's not Instagram-friendly or dramatic. No café, no facilities to speak of. Just reeds, water, and enough quiet to remember why you came to Hertfordshire in the first place.
