St. Wulfram's Church

The soaring tower of St. Wulfram's dominates Grantham's skyline, and once you're inside, it's immediately obvious why this church matters. Built in the 14th century, it's a proper example of Perpendicular Gothic done right - all vertical lines and ambitious stonework that makes you crane your neck just to take it in.

What strikes you first is the height. The nave feels cavernous in the best way, with those intricate roof bosses catching light as you walk through. The stained glass isn't uniform - some panels are medieval originals, others Victorian replacements, and you can spot the difference if you're paying attention. There's also a rather fine brass collection if you're into that sort of thing, and the general atmosphere is calm rather than touristy.

It's worth half an hour at least, longer if you're the type to sit and read the memorial plaques. Families with younger children might find it a bit heavy on the standing-around-looking aspect, though the sheer scale tends to impress kids. History enthusiasts will spend more time here - there's genuine medieval fabric throughout, not just Victorian restoration work.

The church sits right in Grantham's town centre, making it easy to combine with other attractions. If you're staying at Wagtail Country Park just three miles outside town, the drive takes minutes. Free entry as far as I'm aware, though it's worth checking opening times before you visit - ecclesiastical buildings can be particular about their hours.
