St Wulfram's Church

The spire catches you first - a proper medieval needle pointing into the Lincolnshire sky above Grantham. St Wulfram's Church isn't tucked away; it dominates the town centre, and for good reason. Built largely between the 14th and 15th centuries, this is one of England's finest perpendicular Gothic churches, and stepping through the doors feels like walking into a masterclass in medieval craftsmanship.

Inside, the soaring nave draws your eye upward immediately. The ribbed vaults are intricate, the stained glass catches light beautifully, and the proportions just work. The church is dedicated to Saint Wulfram, an Anglo-Saxon saint, and there's real substance to what you're looking at - this wasn't a small-town effort. The font and some of the earlier stonework tell you this place has been here since much earlier.

History buffs will spend a solid hour examining details. Families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in, unless your children are genuinely interested in medieval architecture. It's free to enter and genuinely worth a thirty-minute detour if you're passing through Grantham.

Pair it with a stay at nearby Wagtail Country Park and you've got a proper base for exploring the area. Grantham itself has enough cafes and shops to justify a morning's wander. The church is best visited midweek when it's quieter, and afternoon light through the windows is worth timing for.
