St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Lapford

The church sits quietly in the village of Lapford, just a few miles south of Crediton, looking much as it probably did five centuries ago. St Thomas of Canterbury is a proper medieval parish church - the sort of place where you half expect to bump into someone in a cassock round the corner, even though you almost certainly won't.

Don't expect crowds or facilities - this is a working village church, not a tourist attraction tarted up for visits. That's rather the point. Twenty minutes inside is probably enough unless you're genuinely into medieval architecture, but it's well worth the diversion if you're in the neighbourhood. The churchyard's pleasant for a wander too, and it gives you a real sense of how these communities actually tick rather than how they're marketed.
