St Thomas a Becket Church, Brightling

The church sits in a quiet corner of Brightling, a village that feels like it's been forgotten by time. St Thomas a Becket Church is a proper medieval gem - the sort of place where you can still see the original stonework and feel the weight of centuries in the walls. It's not grand or showy, which is exactly why it works. The interior is modest but genuine, with that particular smell of old wood and stone that you only get in churches that have stood for around 700 years.

Walkers will appreciate the setting more than anyone else. The church sits just off the main routes through the Sussex High Weald, and the surrounding countryside rewards a proper ramble. This isn't a destination that'll occupy your whole afternoon - you'll spend maybe 20 minutes inside unless you're the sort who reads every memorial stone. But combined with a walk around the village and the open countryside nearby, it becomes part of a proper day out.

The nearest proper town is Battle, which is only a short drive away and has far more facilities. If you're camping at Beech Estate Campsite, St Thomas a Becket makes for an excellent morning stop before heading off on the day's main activities. The village itself is small enough that you won't find cafes or much else, so bring what you need.

Access appears free, though I'd check locally first. The building is genuinely worth five minutes of detour if you're passing through Sussex, especially if you're interested in medieval churches that haven't been over-restored.
