St Swithun's Church, Littleham

The church sits quietly in Littleham, just outside Bideford, and it's one of those places that rewards a slight detour if you're camping nearby. St Swithun's is a proper medieval affair - the sort of building that makes you understand why people bothered to walk miles on foot to get here centuries ago. The churchyard alone is worth the visit, with old stone markers scattered about and views across Devon farmland that don't require paying anything or booking a slot.

Inside, there's genuine character. The architecture speaks to genuine age rather than heavy restoration, which is refreshing. If you've got kids, they'll probably lose interest after twenty minutes, but the walk through the lanes to reach it is pleasant enough that it won't feel wasted. History types and anyone keen on small parish churches will find themselves lingering longer.

Access appears to be free, and you can turn up without faffing about with opening hours - it's the kind of village church that's generally open during daylight. Allow half an hour maximum unless you're really into medieval stonework and grave inscriptions.

If you're staying at Owl Valley Glamping or Broad Park just down the road, this sits nicely into a morning walk loop round the village before heading elsewhere. It's unpretentious and honest - no coffee shop, no visitor centre, just a church doing what it's done for about five centuries. That's rather the point.
