St. Stephen's Church

The red-brick Victorian church that dominates Bexhill's seafront is hard to miss, and frankly, that's the point. St. Stephen's Church was built in the 1880s when the town was being reinvented as a proper seaside resort, and it still commands the landscape like a Victorian confidence trick. The interior is surprisingly grand - proper stained glass, decent woodwork, and the kind of peaceful quiet you've almost forgotten exists.

It's not a destination in itself, but if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Normans Bay is only four miles away - it's worth the walk into Bexhill town centre to have a look around. The exterior photography alone justifies the trip if you're into Victorian architecture. The church sits close enough to the seafront that you can combine a visit with a proper walk along the beach, which is the real draw for anyone camped out in this corner of Sussex.

Families with older kids might appreciate it; younger ones will get restless after ten minutes. History buffs will enjoy spotting the period details. No need to set aside more than half an hour unless you're the type to read every plaque. Free to enter, naturally. The staff are welcoming if you catch someone about, though it's not a visitor attraction with opening times as such - it functions as a working parish church first and foremost. Go on a quiet weekday morning if you want the place to yourself.
