St Simon & St Jude, Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Milton-under-Wychwood, a village that feels properly remote despite being in the Cotswolds. St Simon & St Jude is one of those small parish churches that rewards a five-minute diversion off the main road - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Inside, there's the usual mix of medieval bones and Victorian fiddling about, but it's the kind of church where you notice details because there aren't crowds. Medieval stone work, some decent monuments, the sort of craftsmanship that makes you realise how seriously people took their local church. The churchyard itself is worth a wander if the weather's decent - proper peaceful, with old gravestones disappearing into the long grass.

This isn't a destination on its own unless you're deep into ecclesiastical architecture or a completist about Cotswolds churches. Where it works is as a gentle stop during a walking holiday in the area. If you're based at Cotswolds Meadow Glamping or one of the other parks within striking distance - Wysdom Touring Park is only four and a half miles away - it's the sort of spot to slot in between longer walks. Takes twenty minutes maximum, costs nothing, and breaks up a day nicely.

Go on a weekday morning if you want the place entirely to yourself. The light through the windows is best then anyway. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point.
