St Serf's Church

The ruins of St Serf's Church sit quietly on the banks of the River Forth, a few miles south of Stirling, and they're worth the short drive from town if you're into medieval ecclesiastical remains. What you get is a roofless kirk with substantial stone walls still standing - the sort of place where you can actually picture what it must have looked like when it mattered. The real draw is the setting: riverside, peaceful, with views across to the hills beyond.

This is one for history enthusiasts rather than casual visitors. You won't spend hours here. Twenty minutes to half an hour is realistic - long enough to walk around, note the architectural details, take a few photographs. The church dates back centuries and has that proper worn quality of Scottish heritage sites that haven't been over-restored into museum blandness.

Access appears to be free and the site feels genuinely open to the public, though facilities are minimal - it's very much a come-and-look proposition with no visitor infrastructure. Go on a dry day if you can; riverside settings get muddy quickly. The riverside walk itself is rather nice, so you could combine it with a longer stroll along the Forth.

If you're staying at Witches Craig or Highland Gateway - both excellent parks within a few miles - this makes a straightforward afternoon outing when the weather's decent. It won't occupy a full day, but paired with Stirling itself or nearby walking routes, it slots in perfectly as part of a proper Clackmannanshire itinerary.
