St Saviour's Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Pevensey, a solid Saxon structure that's been doing its job for over a thousand years. Most visitors miss it entirely, which seems a shame given what's inside. The chancel arch alone is worth the stop - it's genuinely old, the sort of thing that makes you feel the weight of centuries in a way that's hard to describe until you're actually standing there.

It's not a grand gesture of a building. No soaring nave or elaborate stonework. What you get instead is authenticity - the real thing, not a Victorian reworking. The interior is spare and honest, with enough medieval detail to keep history types engaged for twenty minutes or so. If you've got kids, they'll probably lose interest after five, though the graveyard outside is the sort of place where they might wander around finding old headstones, which keeps them quietly occupied.

The obvious move is to combine this with the castle ruins down in Pevensey itself - you're already in the area, and the two sites slot together nicely into a morning's exploring. If you're based at Pevensey Bay Holiday Park, it's practically on your doorstep. Warren Wood Country Park is close enough that you could visit all three without too much driving about.

Admission should be free - most parish churches are. Opening hours can be variable, so ring ahead if you're making a special trip, though it's usually open during daylight hours.
