St Peter's & St Paul's Church, Shiplake

The churchyard sits on a bend of the Thames just outside Henley-on-Thames, and the view alone makes the short walk worthwhile. St Peter's & St Paul's is a proper riverside church, all flint and stone, with the kind of quiet that genuinely feels peaceful rather than eerie.

Inside, there's decent medieval work - tracery, some decent monuments - but it's the location that really sets it apart. You're basically standing where the Thames loops prettily, and if you time it right the light through the stained glass hits the river beyond. Not dramatically photogenic, but calming in the way only a working parish church can be.

It's free to wander in, and most people spend twenty to thirty minutes poking about. Kids won't be frantically engaged unless they're the brass-rubbing type, though the riverside walk both ways is lovely enough. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends get busier with walkers doing the Thames Path.

The church itself isn't a "make a special trip" sort of place, but bundled with a proper ramble along the river or a pint in town, it ticks a box.
