St Peter's Church

The church sits quietly on the high street in Marlow, a solid stone structure that rewards a proper look if you've wandered into town from one of the nearby parks. St Peter's is a working parish church, so you're stepping into something real rather than a museum piece - the current congregation still uses the building, which means you need to time your visit around services or ask politely if the doors are unlocked.

Inside, there's genuine medieval work alongside later additions. The chancel and some of the stonework date back centuries, and if you're into the gradual layers of English church architecture, there's enough here to spend twenty minutes poking around. The windows tell their own story, and the general air of a church that's been loved and maintained rather than preserved in aspic is rather refreshing.

It's a natural stop if you're staying at Hurleyford Farm or Hurley Riverside Park - both just a few miles away - and you fancy a walk into Marlow proper. The town itself is worth a half-day anyway, with the riverside and decent cafes, so combining a church visit with a mooch around makes sense. Don't expect it to be a major draw in itself; go because you're in the area and want to understand how people actually lived here, not because it's a tick-box attraction. Kids might find fifteen minutes enough unless they're genuinely interested in old buildings.
