St Peter's Church, Palgrave

The church itself is a proper slice of medieval Norfolk - all flint and stone with a tower that's been watching over Palgrave for centuries. You'll find yourself in a village that time rather forgot, which is precisely the point. The interior has that hushed, ancient quality you only get in rural churches where the pews have genuinely been sat in since the 1400s. Stone monuments line the walls, and the light through those narrow windows does something to your head that modern churches just can't manage.

It's the sort of place history enthusiasts will linger for a good hour, tracing names and dates, while walkers using it as a pit stop on a Suffolk ramble might spend twenty minutes. Families with younger kids tend to find it interesting for about half that. The village itself is quiet - not much there beyond the church, to be honest, so you're not building a day around it.

Getting there from Eye (just a few miles away) is straightforward enough. There's no admission charge that we're aware of, though donations are always appreciated for upkeep. If you're staying at Hill Farm Suffolk nearby, it makes a decent morning outing before heading elsewhere - combines nicely with other village churches in the area if you're doing a church-spotting circuit. Worth the detour if you're already in Suffolk, less worth planning a journey specifically for.
