St Peter's Church, Harrow

The churchyard at St Peter's sits on a gentle rise above Harrow village, and on a clear day you can actually see across toward Watford from the older graves. It's a proper medieval church - the sort that's been modified and fussed over through the centuries, so you get a bit of Norman work alongside later additions. Inside, the light comes through in that particular way old churches manage, picking out carved details you'd miss in a photograph.

This isn't a showstopper attraction in the way cathedral towns are. You won't spend hours here. Families with restless children should probably manage twenty minutes, then move on. History enthusiasts will find more to chew on - the building itself tells stories about the village's development.

It works well as a stop during a wider exploration of the area. Aldenham Country Park sits just five miles away and offers proper walking routes through woodlands if you want to stretch the legs after sitting still indoors. Home Farm Glamping is nearby too, so if you're based that way, it's worth the detour on a morning walk. The village itself is quiet - no crowds, no souvenir tat.

Admission is free, naturally. Turn up whenever suits you. The real appeal is the peace and the sense of continuity - generations of locals buried in that churchyard, their names still legible on the stones.
