St. Peter’s Church

The squat stone tower of St. Peter's Church rises from the flat Cambridgeshire landscape like something from a medieval painting - all flint and rubble, weathered by centuries. It's a proper working parish church, the kind where you'll find real people saying actual prayers rather than tourists shuffling through with guidebooks.

What strikes you first is how old it genuinely is. Parts date to the 12th century, and you can see it in the fabric - rough stonework, narrow windows that suggest a time when defensive architecture mattered more than letting the light flood in. If you're into medieval churches - and I mean properly into them, not just ticking boxes - this rewards close attention. The architecture tells a story without any of the visitor-centre theatrics. You won't spend hours here, and you shouldn't expect to. Thirty minutes walking round, reading the few plaques, taking in the atmosphere. That's the point.

It works brilliantly as a walking destination from either Heatherbield Lodge or HappenOak Treehouse, both within striking distance. Combine it with a broader exploration of the Cambridge countryside and you've got something genuine - not the postcard version of the Fens, but the real thing. Access appears unrestricted, though best to call ahead if you're making a special trip.
