St Peter’s Church, Bromyard

Standing in the centre of Bromyard, St Peter's Church is one of those solid parish churches that makes you realise how much Herefordshire's market towns have relied on their medieval foundations. The building itself is substantial - proper medieval stonework with later additions that tell you something about the town's fortunes over centuries. Inside, it's got the usual things you'd expect: decent carved wooden elements, some interesting monuments, and that particular smell of old stone and polish that never gets old.

It's genuinely worth stepping inside if you're passing through Bromyard anyway, though it's not the sort of place that'll keep you occupied for hours. Twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're into reading every plaque. Family groups with older kids won't find it tedious - children who can read tend to find old church monuments oddly fascinating once you point out the skeleton carvings and oddments.

The real value here is as part of a wider Bromyard wander. The town itself has kept its character as a proper working market town rather than becoming a theme park version of itself. Visit St Peter's, grab a coffee, nose around the independent shops. If you're staying at The Rock Caravan Park just south of town, or Brook House Woods slightly further out, this is your obvious cultural port of call. It costs nothing to get in - just turn up during daylight hours. Don't expect grand architecture or famous artworks, but do expect honest medieval craftsmanship and a genuine sense of place.
