St Peter's Catholic Church

The red sandstone facade of St Peter's stops you dead when you round the corner in Newbridge. It's Victorian Gothic done properly - all soaring arches and stained glass that actually catches the light rather than looking tired and grey. The interior is surprisingly intimate for such a grand exterior. High ceilings, ornate woodwork, and that particular smell of old stone and polish that churches seem to perfect.

You'll want a good half hour inside if you're into ecclesiastical architecture - the detail work rewards proper looking. History buffs will appreciate the Victorian craftsmanship, though the church itself isn't centuries old like many Scottish places. Families with kids won't find it massively engaging unless they're genuinely interested in churches, but it's worth a brief stop if you're passing through.

It's free to visit, assuming the doors are open - worth checking before you make the trip. Newbridge itself is nothing special, but if you're staying at Linwater Caravan Park just down the road, it's a decent afternoon diversion. The church sits comfortably within a broader wander around the Central Belt, close enough to Edinburgh for a proper day out but with enough breathing room that you won't feel crowded. Go on a weekday morning if you want peace - Sundays obviously get busier with worshippers.
