St Peter's Camerton

The churchyard at St Peter's sits quietly on the edge of Camerton, just a few miles outside Cockermouth, and it's exactly the sort of place you stumble upon when you're not really looking for it. The church itself dates back centuries - there's proper medieval stonework visible if you know where to look - and the gravestones scattered across the grass tell the story of generations of Cumbrian families.

Inside, it's all cool stone and that particular smell of old English churches - candle wax, damp, something indefinable that speaks to centuries of quiet worship. It works brilliantly as a gentle walk from Harbour Side Caravan Park if you're staying in the area - the walk itself is pleasant enough, taking you through actual Cumbrian countryside rather than tourist-trap scenery. Give yourself twenty minutes to wander inside and another ten in the churchyard if the weather's decent. There's no admission charge, though like many small churches, a donation box sits by the door and feels appropriate.

Perfect if you want something low-key between more demanding park attractions. History enthusiasts will find enough to occupy them without it becoming a full day commitment. Families with young children might find it a bit static, but older kids who aren't too fidgety will be fine.
